How It All Began

This is our story. Our story to “I do.” Honestly, it’s a hard story to tell. I don’t want to lie, this a no fluff, real-life honest blog, or at least I want it to be. Our story has some ugly parts, some not so pretty moments, some tearfully painful memories, as does our life and everyones. But my hope is that in our weakness, God’s love and faithfulness will shine through.

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 2 Corinthians 12:9

It’s not all sad, or hard to tell, but sometimes you’ve got to go through the rain to get to the sunshine. And when sitting in the rain, you’re gonna get wet. In our case, we felt like we built an ark in the desert, and we were waiting for the rain…

Disclaimer—if you are not a 4-H’er or do not know about 4-H you may not understand the terminology used. Also there are pictures of us when were young and awkward-enjoy.

A long, long time ago a little girl’s mom signed her and her sister up for 4-H. Since the little girl was too little to show, she joined the ranks of cloverbuds in 4-H. (She couldn’t actually be in 4-H till she was 9. She was only 5. But she could still be a part of the 4H group, she just couldn’t show an animal at the fair.)

Her sister showed Pygmy Goats and her family came to love the Fair, just as her mom had when she was little. Finally, the little girl turned 9 and it was her time to show.

It just so happened that at this same time, a little boy from a neighboring town was asked what animal he wanted to show in 4-H by his parents. Of all the things he could have chose, he picked Pygmy Goats (which is the animal pictured below for those of you that don’t know what a Pygmy Goat is). So his mom searched for a 4-H group. She just so happened to find the group that the little girl was in, and she signed him up.

The little girl and the little boy became friends and frequently played tag after meetings, along with the other 4-H’ers.

Probably our first date. We walked around the goat barn and talked.

After awhile the club got smaller with just a couple of families in it. The families in this new club became very close, the kids even closer. The little girl and little boy became even better friends.

Right before we went off to dinner with our folks.

Right before we went off to dinner with our folks.

One day the little girl and little boy were old enough to go to Homecoming, as they had just entered into high school. He asked her to the dance and she said yes. Since the families new each other well, they all went out to eat before. Both parents and both siblings. Shocker. This made things awkward and the night didn’t end up going well. They remained friends though.

Each went their separate way, journeying through different high schools but always coming back together for 4-H meetings and especially fair week. The fair held, and holds a special place in each of their hearts.

Senior year rolled around—as it does—and the not-so-little boy asked the not-so-little girl out on a date and she said yes. From there their friendship blossomed.

They started dating as they both went off to college. They quickly became inseparable, the best of friends.

And soon after the boy and girl became husband and wife.

In case you didn’t catch on, this is our story, though we don’t take claim to it. I look back on my life and how I met my husband and I am in awe. There are a lot of “JUST SO HAPPENED’S.” Some people might say it was meant to be, it’s fate, it’s random, that I lucked out, that I was in the right place at the right time. I don’t think so.

You see it was not a coincidence that my mom was in 4-H and wanted my sister and I in 4-H. It wasn’t a coincidence that my husband wanted to show PYGMY GOATS of all things. It was not a coincidence that we ended up in the same 4-H group or that the group got smaller.

It was destined, it was planned, my husband and I were meant to meet, meant to be friends and fall in love before even we were born. Our story was set in motion a long time before ourselves. We are part of a larger story set in motion a long time ago. And for that I am forever grateful.
