27 Verses On Anxiety

It took me awhile to admit I had a problem, a real life altering problem. I had long tried to convince myself this was normal I was normal but my anxiety was disrupting my day and changing how I interacted with people.

If you dug down deep enough in my anxiety problem you’d discover that my anxiety stemmed from my deep lack of control and desire for it. Simply stated I want to be God but only God is God, as Elizabeth Elliot would say.

I cannot save myself. I cannot make the rain stop. I cannot heal or fix my husband. I cannot fix my sin. I cannot plan my life. I cannot make things happen. There is a whole slew of things I cannot do because  I am not God. God is God. I can shake my finger at Him all I want but that doesn’t change reality. I can worry and fret about the future, about what someone said or might think about me, about our financial state or my aging barren body but worrying about tomorrow only robs me of today’s joy.

My anxiety is ultimately a trust problem and the verses that have helped me the most are the ones that remind me of my rightful position and His. They are the verses that tell of His worthy character, of His grace towards me and love of me. I feel less anxious when I finally rest in Him, trusting Him.

Below you will find my collection of verses that have helped me with my anxiety. I hope that these verses help encourage your heart and renew your mind to see God as God and you as not, which will ultimately help you become more dependent upon Him:

*this is a growing list that I will continue to add to.

You Are Never Alone

1. “You are my servant, I have chosen you and not cast you off; fear not, for I am with you: be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Isaiah 41:9-10

2. “It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.” Deuteronomy 31:8

3. “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9

4. “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me: your rod and your staff, they comfort me.” Psalm 23:4

5. “O Lord, you have searched me and known me! You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar. You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways. Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Lord, you know it altogether. You hem em in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high; I cannot attain it.” Psalm 139 1-6

6. And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place, that they should seek God, and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him. Yet he is actually not far from each one of us, for “‘In him we live and move and have our being’; as even some of your own poets have said, “‘For we are indeed his offspring.’” Acts 17:26-28

God’s Character

7. “Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand and marked off the heavens with a span, enclosed the dust of the earth in a measure and weighed the mountains in scaled and the hills in a balance? Who taught him the path of justice, and taught him knowledge, and showed him the way of understanding? Isaiah 40: 12-14

8. “Can you find out the deep things of God? Can you find out the limit of the Almighty? It is higher than heaven–what can you do? Deeper than Sheol–what can you know? Its measure is longer than the earth and broader than the sea.” Job 11:7-9

9. “Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised, and his greatness is unsearchable.” Psalm 145:3

10. “Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways! For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor? Or who has given a gift to him that he might be repaid?” Romans 11:33-35

11. “For who is God, but the Lord? And who is a rock, except our God?” Psalm 18:31

12. “This God–his way is perfect; the word of the Lord proves true; he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him.” Psalm 18:30

19. “The Lord of hosts has sworn: As I have planned so shall it be, and as I have purposed so shall it stand.” Isaiah 14:24

Specifically on Anxiety

20. “And Jesus said to his disciples, ” Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat, nor about your body, what you will put on. For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing. Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more valuable are you than the birds! ANd which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his life span of life? If then you are not able to do as small a thing as that, why are you anxious about the rest? Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass which is alive in the field today, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will he clothe you, O you of little faith!” Luke 12:22-28

21. “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not more value than they? And which of you being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you,O you of little faith? Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘WHat shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ Matthew 6: 25-32

22. “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.” Matthew 6:34

23. “I sought the Lord, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears.” Psalm 34:4

24. “When the cares of my heart are many, your consolations cheer my soul.” Psalm 94:19

25. “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippines 4:6-7

26.. “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30

27. “Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.” 1 Peter 5:6-7
